Thanks, Espen. I had already felt that the human development analogy can be applied to both the business and IT sides of the business-IT maturity system, but I think you raise an interesting extension to this line of thinking as it relates to social relationships among IT and other organizational entitities - you cite the CFO relationship; and this can be extended to relationships with sales, marketing, product development, etc. This is very much in tune with Enteprise 2.0 thinking, with the significant role of collaboration as a key differentiator.

On the more serious side, I do like the idea of chopping up maturity in finer dimensions. One point is that the various categories pertain not only to what the IT organization does, but also to which other parts of the business side it interacts with. It should be possible to map out stages of maturity based on, say, the relationship with the CFO (from cost measurement through to benefit collection, for instance).

Now there's a metaphor I like, though the use of the figure there implies that the relationship between IT and Business over time will revert back to infancy (or at least infantility) again.

In the spirit of the hour, here is Dave Barry's take on human development (from http://pakulakmadness.blogspot.com/2006/04/male-midlife-crisis.html):

AGE... PHASE.... INTERESTS

0-2 ......Infancy... .....Pooping
3-9 .......Innocence ....Guns
10-13 ....Awareness... Sex
14-20 ....Emancipation.... Sex
21-29 ....Empowerment.... Sex
30-39 .....Attainment..... Sex
40-65 ....MIDLIFE CRISIS OCCURS HERE
66-Death .....Contemplation.... Pooping

Now, this pertains more to individuals (IT or business careers?) than organizations, but since we live in a time where science increasingly look at interactions between many small pieces rather than trying to chop things up into finite elements...
