Vinnie, great observation, and you are right - for most companies, there are indeed "massive optimization opportunities in the core" that have to be captured (though with the financial conditions of the last couple of years, some companies have already wrung out much of the low hanging fruit.)

My concern is that in most companies I see, that "optimization" and ongoing maintenance activities are consuming virtually all the resources and management attention - we spend all our energy "optimizing" and no energy "innovating." The cloud, IMHO, makes it easier to innovate, while we continue optimizing and refreshing the core.

Re: I believe most of the “core” opportunities have been addressed in the typical global enterprise.

The implementation may be done, now there are massive optimiziation opportunities in the core. Reduce sw maintenance charges from 17 to 25% a year, dramatically lower data center/hosting/storage/network charges, lower cost of support through offshoring (or re-negotiated first wave offshoring)/shared services/ may be BPO.

There is 30 to 70% optimization possibilities in most companies

And take those savings and use them towards the edge...
