Thanks for your comment, Dr. Makker! A couple of points. First, my open heart surgery was not an option I explored "to look good" or for my "self esteem." It was essential for me to avoid an inevitable heart attack that would have limited my life in significant ways, or may have ended it prematurely!

As for your excellent question about post-surgical depression, I don't know the statistics, or really very much about this topic. It was something that I was warned about - by the excellent material I was provided by the hospital from the American Heart Association - and by my surgeon, before and after the operation. It was also raised by my nurses during cardiac rehabilitation. In my case, I experienced very little post-surgical depression. There were times it was quite stressful to me and my family - especially with some of the setbacks I experienced during recovery (a bad case of gout, urinary bleeding, and so on.) But the excellent care I had in hospital, and throughout rehab, and from my family and GP, on top of a normally optimistic disposition, I think shielded me from a more severe depression.

I believe what you have said is correct. Men nowadays are continuing to exploring options for them to look good. It’s not just for the physical aspect but for your self esteem also. Can you post more details of men that face post-surgical depression? Do you have the numbers or statistics or perhaps testimonies? Thank you.
